Feet self-care level in diabetic patients of a hospital in North of Lima

Abstract

Objectives: To determine the feet self-care level and its associated factors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) treated in a national hospital in North Lima. Materials and methods: This is a quantitative approach, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of 250 patients with a diagnosis of DM2 treated at the Sergio Bernales National Hospital in the Comas district, located in North of Lima. The foot self-care practices instrument designed by the authors of the present study was used. Results: Of the sample, 62.8% (n = 157) were 60 years of age or older, 64% (n = 160) were women and the rest were men. Of the participants with DM2, 50.8% (n = 127) presented a poor feet self-care level, of them 31.6% (n = 79) were women. Of the sample, 25.20% (n = 63) had a regular feet self-care level and only 24% (n = 60) had a good feet self-care level. Patients who did not receive education about foot care had a higher proportion of poor feet self-care level (p <0.001). Conclusions: A high proportion of patients with DM2 presented a poor feet self-care level. The factor associated with self-care was education regarding foot care. It is recommended to improve education on foot care and in this, the nursing professionals can assume a fundamental role. Keywords: Self-care, Foot, Diabetes Mellitus, Peru (Source: MeSH, NLM).
