Factors associated with the continuity of anemia in children attended at the first level of care
Factores asociados a la continuidad de la anemia en niños atendidos en primer nivel de atención
Abstract
Objective. To identify factors associated with the continuity of anemia in children attended at the first level of care. Materials and Methods. Quantitative, observational, correlational, and cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 90 children aged 6 to 36 months with a diagnosis of anemia, attended at the Growth and Development Service (CRED) in a first level of care facility in the district of San Martin de Porres, Lima. Hemoglobin levels were taken from a secondary source and the other variables were collected using a validated questionnaire. Results. Ninety children of both sexes participated, with a median age of 12 months (Min. 6, Max. 36, Q1: 12, Q3: 24, IQR: 12). There was a significant association between sex and continuity of anemia in children [p=0.045, OR=3.073 (95%CI: 0.992-9.520)]. Continuity of anemia in children was associated with treatment compliance [p<0.001; OR=17.287 (95%CI: 4.886-61.154)], with CRED control [p<0.001; OR=8.8 (95%CI: 2.521-30.718)] and with mother's knowledge of anemia [p=0.005; OR= 5.50 (95%CI: 1.517-19.939)]. Conclusions: Factors associated with the continuity of anemia in children are non-compliance with anemia treatment, non-attendance at child growth and development control, as well as the mother's lack of knowledge about anemia. Health facilities at the first level of care should intervene in the above factors as part of the fight against anemia.Downloads
