Obesity and overweight among students of a university of North Lima

Objectives: To determine the frequency of overweight and obesity among students of a university of North of Lima. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. A total of 470 students from five faculties of a private university of North of Lima participated. For the evaluation of overweight and obesity, the Body Mass Index was used. Results: Of the total participants, 56.4% (n = 265) were 20 years old or younger, 72.1% (n = 339) were women, 44.3% (n = 208) were education students, 23.4% (n = 110) of nursing and in a lower percentage student of the faculties of engineering, administration and accounting. Of the sample, 30.4% (n = 143) of the students were overweight and 14.7% (n = 69) were obese. Conclusions: There is a high proportion of university students with excess weight, which is why it is necessary to implement or reinforce prevention and promotion measures for healthy styles.
