Smartphone dependence on sleep quality and academic performance: a narrative review
Dependencia de teléfonos inteligentes en la calidad del sueño y desempeño académico: revisión narrativa
Abstract
The growing addiction to smartphones among young people, especially university students, is linked to mental and physical health problems, including impaired sleep and academic performance. Objective: The aim of the present work was to conduct a literature review on smartphone dependence and its relationship with sleep quality and academic performance. Methods: It was a narrative review. The scientific search was carried out in databases such as Scopus, Pudmed, Web of Science, and in indexed and high-impact journals, using English descriptors such as AND, OR, among others. Results: A total of 204 articles were found, of which 51 were eligible. These were mostly original, quantitative research, published within the last 5 years. Smartphone addiction among young people, especially college students, is linked to mental and physical health problems, including impaired sleep and academic performance. Conclusions: The use of health applications and eHealth strategies is recommended to mitigate the aforementioned effects, emphasizing the importance of promoting healthy habits and the responsible use of mobile devices to improve health and academic success.Downloads
