Objective: Define the functional duties of nursing specialists working in the community, which allow the achievement of their job functions. Materials and Methods: Qualitative-descriptive research. We worked with a heterogeneous population, constituted by 73 specialists of community nursing who worked in the primary health-care in La Havana. By geographic feasibility we worked with a sample of 52, the sampling was non-probabilistic and simple intentional. Results: The self-perceived care that stood out most was the "flu syrups and oral antihypertensive". Care is evident, allowing them to put into practice everything learned and use the knowledge and techniques of the profession for health care which contributes to a change in their behavior, given that it allows a responsible and committed professional action with a humanist approach. Conclusions: Defined functional duties respond to the demands of current health care, contribute to a change in the actions of the community nursing specialist, capable not only of efficiently solving current and emerging professional practice problems, but also of achieve a responsible and committed professional action with social development.
