Resumo

Uma alta porcentagem das vítimas de mordeduras de cães é composta por crianças, e o fator de risco mais importante para mordeduras em crianças é permitir que os cães vivam de forma permanente ou parcial dentro do domicílio. A redução da incidência de mordeduras de cães na população pediátrica requer a educação tanto das crianças quanto de seus pais, enfatizando que qualquer cão pode morder, independentemente da raça, e que todas as interações entre crianças e cães devem ser rigorosamente supervisionadas. No entanto, é pouco provável que a educação, por si só, seja suficiente para prevenir mordeduras. Acreditamos que a frequência de mordeduras de cães em crianças diminuirá significativamente quando os cães forem mantidos fora do domicílio.
