Abstract

Cervical cancer remains a major public health concern due to its high disease burden and the persistent occurrence of diagnoses at advanced stages. Globally and regionally, the greatest burden is concentrated in low- and middle-income countries, where limitations in screening and vaccination programs persist. In Latin America and Peru, low screening coverage, structural barriers, and deficiencies within the healthcare system contribute to a substantial proportion of cases being diagnosed at advanced stages. This phenomenon results from a multifactorial interaction involving social determinants, limited access to healthcare services, and failures in timely follow-up. In this context, strengthening primary prevention strategies through vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) and optimizing secondary prevention through organized and accessible screening programs are essential. Furthermore, research aimed at identifying factors associated with delayed diagnosis is needed to guide more effective public health interventions.
